Newcomb Art Gallery | New Orleans, LA DWI Attorney | Harmon, Smith & Vourvoulias, LLCThroughout history, female artists have played a critical role in the cultural development of the world. Reflecting that impact is the newest exhibit at the Newcomb Art Gallery, titled, “Women, Art, and Social Change: The Newcomb Pottery Enterprise.”

If you have never visited the Newcomb Art Gallery, it is a must-see cultural immersion for Tulane University and the New Orleans community. It encompasses the Wolenberg Art Center at Tulane, serving as a physical—and symbolic—bridge between the university’s art studio and art history programs. [Read more…]

Drinking and Driving Crackdown | DUI Attorney | Harmon, Smith & Vourvoulias, LLCLook at the clock, right now. Set a timer or alarm on your smartphone for three hours from now.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), drunk-driving crashes claim a victim who was not driving drunk in that amount of time—every three hours.

Because of this, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has joined the NHTSA to launch the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown across the country, including Louisiana.

The crackdown focuses on the victims who are innocent of any crime, killed by drunk drivers. According to the NHTSA study, nearly 10,000 people die each year in drunk driving crashes. [Read more…]

Three Personal Injury Claims Filed against Citi Bike

Citi bike personal injury claims - Harmon, Smith & Vourvoulias, LLCThe Citi Bike program in New York City seems like a simple, helpful idea: provide rentable bikes with stations throughout the city to anyone who would like to ride.

For three pedestrians, however, the parking stations have caused them great injury.

According to a report from the New York Daily News, three people who claim they sustained injury after tripping on the parking stations earlier this year are suing the Citi Bike program.

Lashonne Shelton, Howard Orlick, and Diana Mathes have filed personal injury claims, charging that the bike racks created “trap-like” conditions. [Read more…]

NBA Coach Charged with DWI

Share Button

New Orleans LA DUI defense attorneyWith the NBA being such a big part of the sports culture here, I found the recent news of a DWI arrest for a coach quite interesting.

According to the NBA, Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer was arrested on Aug. 28 for not having working taillights. The trooper said the coach had bloodshot, watery eyes, along with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

The Hawks’ coach refused to take a breath test but agreed to a field sobriety test. Budenholzer told the officer that he only had one glass of wine before being pulled over, despite slurred and slow speech patterns. [Read more…]

Can I safely use my cellphone while driving?

Share Button

New Orleans attorneyAs the technology in cellphones increases, there is also an unfortunate increase in driver-distraction. People are texting, tweeting, checking their email, answering phone calls, and setting reminders while they should be paying attention to the road.

As an auto accident attorney in New Orleans, I see the painful results of these actions all too often.

Recently, I found an article from Progressive that gives some helpful tips for drivers with concern for cellphone safety.

First, get to know your device and its features before you ever hit the road. Read the manual, memorize the keypad and speed dial functions, and know how to answer calls, all without looking at your phone.

When the option is available, a hands-free device is the safest way to go. You can choose from mounting devices to Bluetooth earpieces, all which make your drive safer. [Read more…]

French Market District

Share Button

personal injury attorneyNew Orleans is famous for many things, but I feel like nothing truly demonstrates the history, passion, and energy of the city like the French Market.

For over 200 years, the French Market has existed on the same site. It began as a Native American trading post on the Mississippi River, chosen by the French. Today, it is a cultural, commercial, and entertainment gem that New Orleans proudly boasts.

Today, you can find many events, festivals, concerts, children’s events, and holiday events at the market.

There are many cafés and restaurants to choose from, including Café Pontalba, a restaurant heavy on New Orleans’ classic cuisine like seafood po-boys, jambalaya, and etouffee. Also try the Galvez Restaurant, which has continental Spanish cuisine, tapas, and one of the best views in the city. [Read more…]

DUI checkpoint alert app

Share Button

New Orleans DUI attorneyAs an experienced DWI attorney, I’m constantly watching for any DWI law news around the country.

An article from LA Weekly recently caught my eye, highlighting an application that may help to reduce the number of people driving under the influence.

As the law struggles to keep up with technology, a Santa Monica, California man is using social media to warn Los Angeles drivers about DUI checkpoints.

MrCheckpoint, the free app created by Sennett Devermont, has been downloaded by thousands of smartphone users. The app provides daily updates on the locations of police DWI checkpoints scheduled throughout Southern California. [Read more…]
