Ambulance Driver Charged With DUI | New Orleans, LA DWI Attorney | Harmon, Smith & Vourvoulias, LLCThroughout life, we all make mistakes. At times, however, those mistakes may be amplified or caused by alcohol. What’s more, if you are a public servant or work for the government, your actions involving alcohol may garner intense media scrutiny.

For example, an ambulance driver was recently charged with a DUI after a crash in Chicago.

A Chicago Tribune article detailed the incident in a recent article. The driver’s BAC was three times the legal limit. He ran a red light with his emergency lights and sirens on, crashing into a pickup truck in a suburban neighborhood.

The driver has been charged with aggravated DUI, causing an accident resulting in bodily harm, disobeying a red light, failing to reduce speed, negligent driving, and failing to carry or display a driver’s license.

The driver has been a licensed emergency medical technician in the state since early 2011.

After the wreck, officers found the driver still behind the wheel, with the engine running. He had a very strong stench of alcohol about him, and officers say he was slurring his speech. After questioning him about his motives, the driver seemed unable to explain where he was going or why he was using sirens and lights. He became very belligerent and uncooperative, eventually recording a BAC level of .271.

When arrested, the driver had a Class D driver’s license.

This is a very unusual case, especially since the driver was an emergency professional on duty.
